Panthers Linebacker Josey Jewell Released Amid Ongoing Concussion Symptoms

Health Comes First: Jewell’s Decision to Prioritize Recovery

CHARLOTTE — The Carolina Panthers have announced the release of linebacker Josey Jewell, who has been struggling with lingering concussion symptoms. The 30-year-old veteran made the decision to step away from the team to focus on his health and recovery, demonstrating a commitment not only to his well-being but also to his teammates. This move allows the Panthers to proceed with a roster that can fully participate in practice as training camp begins.

Future Possibilities: A Return to the Field

While Jewell’s departure marks a significant moment for the team, there remains hope for his future. If his recovery progresses positively, there is a possibility that he could rejoin the Panthers at a later date. Jewell signed a three-year contract during the 2024 offseason and had a notable performance last year, starting 12 games and finishing second on the team with 97 tackles. His contributions also included seven tackles for loss, 3.5 sacks, two fumble recoveries, and an interception.

Team Adjustments: New Faces and Young Talent

Jewell’s absence leaves a gap in the Panthers’ linebacker corps, but the team is prepared to adapt. The Panthers recently signed former Rams starter Christian Rozeboom on the first day of free agency. Additionally, they still have 2024 third-round draft pick Trevin Wallace, who brings starting experience to the lineup.

The Panthers are also nurturing a promising group of young players, including Claudin Cherelus, Jacoby Windmon, special teams standout Jon Rhattigan, and rookies Bam Martin-Scott and Tuasivi Nomura. With these adjustments, the Panthers aim to maintain a competitive edge as they head into the new season.
