Georgia Boy Stung Over 150 Times by Yellowjackets: A Family’s Plea for Support

Beckham Reed’s Harrowing Experience

A tragic incident has left a Georgia family in turmoil as their 2-year-old son, Beckham Reed, was critically injured after being stung more than 150 times by yellowjackets. The young boy was riding his electric toy vehicle on his family’s property when he inadvertently disturbed a hidden nest, leading to a swarm of aggressive yellowjackets attacking him.

His parents quickly rushed him to a nearby emergency room, where medical staff treated him for the numerous stings and sent him home with morphine and Benadryl, believing his condition was stable. However, less than 24 hours later, Beckham’s health took a severe turn for the worse.

Rapid Deterioration of Health

According to family reports, Beckham’s skin began to turn yellow, prompting his parents to take him to Southeast Georgia Health System in Brunswick. There, doctors discovered that he was suffering from multi-organ failure, affecting his heart, liver, and kidneys.

Beckham was swiftly transferred to the Pediatric ICU at Memorial Health University Medical Center in Savannah, where a specialized medical team initiated dialysis, ventilator support, and life-saving intravenous treatments to help his body eliminate the overwhelming amount of venom it had absorbed. Unfortunately, there is no antivenom for yellowjacket stings, and medical professionals can only provide supportive care as the toxins gradually leave his system.

Current Condition and Family’s Hope

As of now, Beckham’s condition remains serious, according to updates from the family’s GoFundMe campaign. He has faced several complications, including rising kidney numbers and fluid accumulation around his lungs. Doctors have restarted dialysis and are administering blood transfusions while closely monitoring his kidney function. Despite these setbacks, Beckham’s family remains hopeful and expresses gratitude for the small improvements he has shown.

The family has also praised the exceptional care provided by the staff at Memorial Savannah, particularly highlighting the dedication of nurse Erica, who went above and beyond by coming in on her day off to care for Beckham.

How You Can Help

In light of the overwhelming medical expenses and the family’s need for support during this challenging time, a GoFundMe page has been established to assist with medical and living costs while they remain in Savannah. As of Wednesday morning, donations have surpassed $75,000, reflecting the community’s compassion and support for Beckham and his family.
