The TED University Receives 250,000 Euro Funding for a Project on Language Teacher Education

Ankara-based university has been awarded 250,000 euros in funding for its international collaboration project aimed at training qualified teachers, particularly in the field of foreign languages. The project, which will run for 2 years, will involve collecting data for at least 100 hours from English language classes. The findings will be analyzed using artificial intelligence and Speech Analysis research method, thereby contributing evidence-based information to the process of language teacher education.

International Collaboration for Language Teacher Education

As efforts to train qualified professionals in various fields continue around the world, the importance of foreign language education becomes more prominent. The TED University, in partnership with Bartın University, Linköping University in Sweden, Potsdam University in Germany, and the International University of Catalonia in Spain, has secured 250,000 euros in funding from the Turkey National Agency for their joint project titled “Digital Transformation of Language Teacher Education with Data-Informed Evidence (DigiLTE)”.

Under the coordination of Dr. Ufuk Balaman, Associate Professor of the Department of English Language Education at TEDU’s Faculty of Education, the project aims to utilize the expertise of stakeholders in classroom discourse and language teacher education. English language classes will be monitored for a minimum of 100 hours and video-recorded for analysis over the course of 2 years. The acquired data will be transcribed, filtered, and prepared for analysis using artificial intelligence, contributing evidence-based outputs to the process of training language teachers at the undergraduate level.

Integration of Artificial Intelligence in Language Teacher Training

The participation of institutions from different countries will enable the most effective combination of diverse demographics and educational processes. In the initial phase, a video archive will be created based on classroom interaction. The findings will be examined using the Speech Analysis research method, and interactive catalogs accessible in digital environments will be developed. These catalogs will be presented to groups of prospective educators through video review and lesson planning meetings.

The project aims to support the training of teachers with data-driven evidence for digital transformation. Furthermore, it will create a model for the development processes in similar professions. The opening meeting of the project will be hosted by the Faculty of Education at TED University in the coming months.
