San Diego Parks Set to Benefit from $7.9 Million Settlement with SeaWorld

City Council Allocates Funds for Park Improvements

San Diego’s City Council has approved a significant allocation of nearly $7.9 million aimed at enhancing various parks across the city. This funding comes from a settlement with SeaWorld, stemming from a dispute over unpaid lease payments dating back to 2020.

Major Projects and Upgrades

Among the 11 designated locations receiving funds, Robb Field in Ocean Beach will see a substantial investment of $3.6 million. This amount will be utilized to modernize restrooms and playground facilities, addressing long-standing community requests for safer and more accessible amenities.

Mayor Todd Gloria emphasized the importance of these upgrades, stating, "San Diegans have been asking for new bathrooms, safer playgrounds, and upgraded facilities — and that’s exactly what we’re delivering." He highlighted that the investment will not only replace aging restrooms at Robb Field but also improve sidewalks in La Jolla, enhance accessibility in Mountain View, and restore historic facilities in Rancho Peñasquitos.

Breakdown of the Settlement

The settlement, which totals $8.5 million, was agreed upon in January and is earmarked for the Mission Bay Park Improvement Fund and the San Diego Regional Park Improvement Fund. Approximately $560,000 of these funds have already been allocated to address revenue shortfalls from previous fiscal years.

Upcoming Projects

The Robb Field renovation plan, approved in April 2024, is currently in the design phase, with construction slated to commence next year. Other notable projects include:

Regional Park Improvements

In addition to the projects at Mission Bay, nearly $2.8 million will be directed towards various initiatives under the San Diego Regional Park Improvement Fund. Key improvements include:

These projects are designed to enrich the experience of both residents and visitors, ensuring that San Diego’s parks remain clean, safe, and enjoyable for all.
