Tornado Warning Update: No Confirmed Tornadoes in New Jersey

Tornado Warning Expired

The tornado warning for parts of Atlantic and Ocean counties has officially expired as of 11:30 p.m. Wednesday. The National Weather Service confirmed that the storm rotation prompting the warning has moved offshore, and fortunately, no tornadoes were reported, nor was there any significant storm damage.

Details of the Warning

The National Weather Service issued the tornado warning shortly before 11 p.m., advising residents in the affected areas to seek immediate shelter in sturdy buildings and to avoid windows. Forecasters detected wind rotation on radar near Tuckerton and Atlantic City, which indicated a potential tornado. However, there were no immediate reports of funnel clouds touching down.

Risks Associated with Tornadoes

In the event of a tornado touching down, the National Weather Service cautioned that flying debris could pose serious dangers to individuals without adequate shelter. Mobile homes are particularly vulnerable, and damage to roofs, windows, and vehicles is likely. Additionally, tree damage is expected.

Severe Thunderstorms and Flash Flooding

The tornado warning coincided with strong thunderstorms sweeping across the state, which have the potential to produce 2 to 3 inches of rain within an hour. This raises the risk of rapid flooding near rivers, streams, and creeks, as well as on poorly drained roads. Flash flood warnings were also issued for multiple counties as the storms advanced into New Jersey.
