Mongolia Faces Teacher Shortage Ahead of 2024-2025 Academic Year

Increasing Demand for Teachers in Mongolia

In the 2023-2024 academic year, approximately 37,000 teachers were working in 871 schools across Mongolia. However, it is expected that around 40,000 teachers will be needed in about 890 schools for the upcoming 2024-2025 academic year.

Tackling the Teacher Shortage

A recent quantitative study conducted in July revealed a shortage of 4,200 teachers in schools. A preliminary study indicates that there is a need for 2,400 teachers in Ulanbator alone.

Subject-Specific Shortages

The study highlights a particular shortage of English and mathematics teachers in primary schools. This year, a total of 2,471 teaching graduates emerged from universities, with 519 specializing in preschool education and 484 in primary school education.

Mongolia’s Education Ministry’s Perspective

The Mongolian Ministry of Education expresses full confidence that the improvement of teacher supply will enhance the quality of student learning.
