Fort Myers High Star’s Journey to the MLB

Zach Root, a standout pitcher from Fort Myers High School, has made headlines after being selected 40th overall by the Los Angeles Dodgers during the MLB Draft held in Atlanta over All-Star Weekend. This marks a significant milestone for Root, who is now the highest draft pick from the area since Shane McClanahan was chosen 30th overall by the Tampa Bay Rays in 2018.

A Historic Victory for Fort Myers

In a recent game, Fort Myers triumphed over Barron Collier, breaking a long-standing drought that dated back to March 18, 2010. Root’s impressive performance, which included nine strikeouts, played a crucial role in this victory, showcasing his talent on the mound.

During his senior year at Fort Myers High in 2022, Root delivered an exceptional performance, finishing with a 6-2 record and a remarkable 1.50 ERA. He struck out 96 batters across 51.1 innings, with an impressive 13.09 strikeouts per seven innings ratio. Notably, 65 of those strikeouts came against teams that advanced to the postseason. His outstanding efforts earned him the Southwest Florida Baseball Player of the Year award.
