The Harrowing Journey of the Uruguay Rugby Team
In 1972, a plane carrying the Uruguay rugby team crashed while crossing the snowy slopes of the Andes on its way to Chile. Directed by J. A. Bayona, known for films like “Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom” and “The Orphanage,” Society of the Snow tells the epic tale of survival that unfolded after the crash. Based on a true story, the details of the events are as tragic as they are disturbing, akin to the provocative script of a skilled novelist.
The Struggle for Survival
Out of the 45 passengers on the plane, only 29 survived the crash. The film captures their struggles, their efforts to overcome the challenges they face, and the gradual development of their characters. The movie has received positive reviews from critics, particularly for its compelling storytelling that minimizes the impact of its relatively long runtime.
Humanity in the Face of Adversity
In the harsh environment where sacrifices are made and acts of cannibalism occur, the film presents a narrative that refrains from passing judgment on the decisions made by the survivors. Despite the brutal circumstances, the team maintains their honor and humanity, making decisions with the consent of their fellow survivors. The dynamics of being a team and having a captain result in a cohesive group that avoids the power struggles often seen in similar survival stories.
The Unwavering Spirit of the Rugby Team
The resilience and determination of the team are portrayed as they undertake an arduous journey without proper equipment to save the lives of those left behind. The lengths they go to and the unity they display in the face of adversity are truly remarkable. The film’s portrayal of their resourcefulness and communal effort to sustain themselves for weeks evokes a deep sense of admiration.
The most poignant moment in the film occurs when the survivors hear on the radio that the search teams will cease looking for them. The overwhelming sense of helplessness in that moment is difficult to capture in words or images.
