Shawn Lemon, a seasoned defensive lineman, is set to resume his career in the Canadian Football League (CFL), with a return to the Montreal Alouettes looking increasingly likely. The league announced his reinstatement on Wednesday, following an indefinite suspension issued on April 24, 2024, due to his involvement in wagering on league games while playing for the Calgary Stampeders in 2021.

Lemon, now 36, faced the longest suspension in CFL history after an independent arbitrator upheld the league’s decision. CFL Commissioner Stewart Johnston emphasized the importance of maintaining the integrity of the game, stating, "We will not tolerate players violating the CFL’s match manipulation policy." Lemon has since taken full responsibility for his actions, acknowledging the negative impact of wagering on sports and committing to educate others on the league’s policies.

The reinstatement comes with strict conditions: any future violations of the match manipulation policy will lead to a lifetime ban from the league.

Current Status and Future Prospects

Although Lemon is currently a free agent, he was spotted leaving Montreal’s Olympic Stadium wearing Alouettes gear, hinting at a potential return. However, he is not yet part of the team, as Alouettes head coach Jason Maas noted, "He’s not a part of our team just yet, but we feel positively about him."

Lemon is still facing a two-game suspension under the league’s drug policy after testing positive for phentermine, a banned stimulant. Lemon’s original suspension came shortly after he announced his retirement following a Grey Cup victory with the Alouettes against the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in 2023. He had signed a one-year deal with the Alouettes in December 2023, aiming for his 14th season in the CFL.

The league confirmed that there was no evidence to suggest that Lemon’s betting activities affected any games, and his teammates and coaches were unaware of his actions at the time.
